i – identification of the main spatial and temporal patterns of lightning activity in Portugal (June2002-2008);

ii – identification in the Portuguese territory of its major lightning prone areas, evaluating susceptibility levels to associated risks;

iii – to investigate the atmospheric environment responsible for thunderstorm triggering in Portugal, identifying the main meteorological controls at different space and time scales, from the large scale to local;

iv – to identify the major socioeconomic impacts of lightning activity in Portugal, evaluating the main effects of thunderstorms in order to propose mitigation measures and guidelines to better protect people, electrical and transportation systems and other economic activities.
